However, if you need any extra services – including specialty packaging/crating, car/boat transit, assembly/disassembly, third party services, storage, shuttle services, or more – you’ll need to find a company with a broader scope of services.
- Reputation and experience. The more experience a company has, the smoother your move should go. However, that’s not the only factor to consider. A company’s reputation is even more important than years in the business. Take a look at national moving companies’ online reviews. Are they rated highly? If anyone rated them low, what was the reason – does it seem like a one-off fluke, or are you detecting a pattern? Also, look for companies with awards from recognized organizations and ask your friends and family members for personal recommendations.
- Packing procedures. You want a company that will take top-quality care of your belongings. If you’re hiring movers to not only move your stuff but pack it, make sure they use protective measures to ensure your belongings are not damaged.
- Rates. When given estimates from a variety of national moving companies, you cannot automatically compare one for one. Ask each company if there are any hidden fees or “unknown” factors that won’t be on the bill until moving day, including fuel charges and other surcharges. Check whether the estimate varies based on the day of the week and time of year that you’re moving.
